Oriole, Bulbul, ETC......

Hi everybody what's been going on in your part of the world? It's definitely spring here, with a fair amount of rain, which is typical of this time of the year.

Black-hooded oriole is a species of bird that has really tested my nerves when it comes to photographing them. This week I managed to get some barely presentable shots of one, and it did give me a run round   my and  a neighbor's gardens.

Black-hooded Oriole, Oriolus xanthornus

Below are the other birds I managed to capture.

Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer)

 Yellow-billed Babbler, Turdoides affinis

I also photographed  a female Common Mormon butterfly and  a gecko, which has to be Spotted House Gecko (Hemidactylus brookii parvimaculatus),  according to what Bushana says here, and caterpillar
that I couldn't place.

female Common Mormon,  Papilio polytes

  2. You did well with the oriole pictures. Golden Orioles are just as shy, almost impossible to get photos of them. Do you see Golden Orioles so far south?

    1. Hi Phil, No,it doesn't occur here. As far as I know it migrates to Africa in winter but not to the Asian continent.

    2. Thanks Amila
I was looking in the latest Birds of India (reviewed on my blog) where Oriolus oriolus is said to be conspecific with Oriolus oriolus kundoo (Indian Golden Oriole), but as you say Black-hooded Oriole seems to replace GO in Sri Lanka

  3. You took some wonderful pictures! The hooded oriole is so interesting looking -- I'm glad you were able to catch" him. The gekko is so funny, looks like he's on parade there, so proud of himself! Every one of your pictures is just perfect.
